India's Narendra Modi congratulates Shehbaz Sharif on taking oath as Prime Minister

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated Shehbaz Sharif on being sworn in as the country's 24th prime minister.

“Congratulations to @CMShehbaz for taking oath as Prime Minister of Pakistan,” read the statement on the Indian PM's official X handle.

A day earlier, President Arif Alvi administered oath to Shehbaz after the latter was elected prime minister on Sunday, returning to the top job after his 16-month stint in the coveted position from April 2022 to August 2023.

This is the second time that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president will serve the nation as prime minister after receiving 201 votes against his opponent from the Pakistan Tehreek-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC). -Insaf (PTI), Omar. Ayub Khan, who polled 92 votes in a rowdy session of the lower house of Parliament.

Previously, several world leaders and diplomats, including Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Iran's Ebrahim Raisi, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Foreign Affairs Secretary Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, the United States ambassador to Pakistan, Donald Blome. and others also congratulated Shehbaz for taking charge as the country's chief executive.

US ready to work with Shehbaz Sharif

Meanwhile, the United States has welcomed the return of Shehbaz Sharif as prime minister and has assured that Washington will work with the new Pakistani government to “promote the shared interests” of the two countries.

“So I'm not going to speak regarding the new prime minister, but as we have said before, we value our long-standing partnership with Pakistan and have always considered a strong, prosperous and democratic Pakistan to be critical to the United States. Pakistan’s interests and our commitment to new Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his government will continue to focus on advancing these shared interests,” State Department spokesman Mathew Miller said at a press briefing on Monday.

“Pakistan is set to achieve greater achievements”

In a congratulatory message, China on Monday said Pakistan under Prime Minister Shehbaz's government is ready to make greater achievements in nation-building.

“We believe that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz and the new administration, Pakistan can achieve greater agreement in nation-building,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said.

Congratulating Shehbaz Sharif on taking over as Prime Minister, he said, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang had sent him congratulatory messages.

The spokesperson said China praised the positive comments made by Pakistan's prime minister on bilateral relations and the construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

“We commend your positive statement on China-Pakistan relations and CPEC,” he said.
