Responding to allegations of clandestine talks, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former president Dr Arif Alvi on Saturday said party founder Imran Khan would choose to remain behind bars in instead of reaching an agreement.

Alvi, however, urged finding a solution to end political disputes between the parties through dialogue.

He made the statement today before the Sialkot district bar association. The former president said that he had long known the founder of the PTI, who, he said, always prioritized the supremacy of the Constitution.

Referring to his meeting with the jailed Khan, Alvi said he asked the party founder if they had entered a dead end, but the PTI founder was optimistic about a way out of the prevailing political crisis.

The senior PTI leader claimed that he found no signs of fear on Khan's face when he found him in jail. He added that the PTI founder was made “many offers but he rejected them all.”

The jailed former prime minister insisted that political uncertainty would not end without finding a “constitutional” solution and that the only option left was to maintain dialogue, he added. The politician said that “only civilians can rule Pakistan.”

He termed the formation of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N)-led coalition government as an “accidental democracy in Pakistan”.

Regarding the May 9 riots, Alvi stated that no one should make a unilateral decision to hold someone responsible, stating that the PTI has “proof” of the events.

Alvi added that his party welcomed the high-level delegates from Saudi Arabia who are scheduled to arrive in Pakistan. He said that the party founded by Imran Khan also supports the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

In his opinion, all stakeholders wanted to improve the national economy. He further said that there is a temporary crisis in the country which will end after “positive leadership” comes to power.

Pointing towards the judiciary, Alvi said all eyes were on the apex court after six judges raised their voice against alleged interference in judicial affairs.
