Heavy rains are likely to hit Karachi and Hyderabad today due to a strong monsoon system

Heavy rains are expected to lash Karachi and Hyderabad as a strong monsoon system is set to hit the Arabian Sea on Thursday evening, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The strong monsoon system near Tharparkar and Rann of Kutch in India is likely to penetrate into Karachi, Hyderabad and other districts, bringing torrential rains with thunderstorms in the evening, the Met Office said.

He said Karachi is likely to receive 150 to 200 mm of rain in the next three days.

According to the meteorological department, there is a possibility of intermittent rains in several parts of Sindh, including Karachi, till August 31, with strong winds and thunderstorms, and heavy downpours at some places.

Speaking during Geo news Speaking on the Geo Pakistan programme, PMD meteorologist Anjum Nazir Zaighum said there was still a strong weather system 270 kilometres from Karachi in the northeast.

“The weather system will increase its intensity marginally, when it reaches the Arabian Sea, and will form a cyclonic storm for about one and a half days,” he warned.

In the Arabian Sea, Zaigham said, an average cyclone lasts three to four days.

The meteorological department, in its daily report, said the wind was blowing at a speed of 13 kilometres from the south-west side of the port city.

While the humidity level in the air was recorded at 88% and the minimum temperature was 26°C, the mercury could reach a maximum temperature of 30°C.

Meanwhile, schools in Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Sajawal, Badin, Tandwalayar, Sanghar will remain closed on Friday, due to forecast rain.

Meanwhile, all schools in Karachi will remain open as the notification of school holidays in the Central district has also been withdrawn.

In the last 24 hours, the PMD said Surjani town in Karachi received the highest rainfall of 30 mm. Nazimabad recorded 26 mm of rain, Keamari 21 mm, Gulshan-e-Hadeed 16 mm, Faisal Base 16 mm, Quaidabad 11.5 mm, Orangi Town 13.1 mm, Saddar 13 mm, North Karachi 12.2 mm, Saddar 11 mm, Sharea Faisal 10 mm, University Road 9 mm, Gulshan-e-Maymar 11.1 mm, Old Airport 11.6 mm, Mauripur 8 mm, Jinnah Terminal 9.6 mm, Masroor Base 9 mm, Korangi 8.2 mm, DHA 7.8 mm and Gadap 3.7 mm during this time.
