For good health, one must get enough sleep and it is equally important how well one sleeps as it is directly associated with the well-being of our heart, according to a behavioral sleep psychologist and associate clinical professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. .

Dr. Shelby Harris considered that the interruption of good quality sleep is detrimental to overall health, leading a person to consume more fatty foods and sugary drinks.

Dr. Harris while speaking with CBS News said: “Poor quality sleep can really influence our heart health.”

Dr Harris said: “The body's balance of ghrelin and leptin, hormones that regulate hunger, is also altered by lack of sleep, leading to increased consumption of high-sugar and high-fat foods.”

Sleep disorders such as insomnia are associated with the heart.

To improve sleep quality, experts suggest limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption. They also suggest reducing the time you use your cell phone before going to sleep.

“Once we get better quality, we'll try to work on as much sleep as possible,” Harris said.

“For some people, it might make them go to bed later, and then little by little it might make them go to bed earlier, rather than switching back and forth. Because that can create a lot of problems, too. for people,” he said. saying.

Harris said sleeping pills and sleeping pills are not ideal for most people, however, he considered cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia as an alternative solution to taking medication.

He said that before prescribing pills for a person, he first undergoes up to eight therapy sessions.

“Not only do you work on hygiene, but also on sleep timing… We work on thoughts about sleep, a lot of people put pressure on themselves to sleep and worry about what will happen if they don't sleep and then we work on that aspect,” he said.

Speaking about food choices, Dr Harris noted that it is important to get a good night's sleep, saying: “People should avoid eating large or heavy meals, such as a large dinner, before bed.”

He recommended having a light meal that can include proteins and carbohydrates. “It's a really good combination that will help you during the night so you don't wake up hungry, which a lot of people do too,” Dr. Harris added.
