Eight dead due to heavy rains in various parts of the country

At least eight people have been killed and dozens more injured in separate rain-related incidents across the country, it emerged late Saturday.

According to details, heavy monsoon rains caused havoc in Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Toba Achakzai, Qilla Abdullah, Ziarat, Pishin, Chaman, Jacobabad, Sukkur, Khairpur and other areas of the country.

Flash floods triggered by heavy rains damaged houses and crops, besides washing away roads and bridges in different areas. Moreover, roofs and walls of several houses also collapsed. At least 10 people were injured in rain-related incidents in different parts of Balochistan.

In Chaman, flash floods washed away a railway track and damaged another in Noshki, cutting off the rail link between Pakistan and Iran.

Scattered showers also drenched Lahore on Saturday while the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had forecast cloudy weather with a chance of rain during the next 24 hours.

Faisalabad received 131 millimetres of rain the previous day, turning the harsh, stifling weather into a pleasant one and transforming low-lying areas into knee-deep pools of water.

The spokesperson of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) said that a maximum of 131 mm of rainfall was recorded in Madina city, while Allama Iqbal Colony recorded 79 mm of rainfall, Dogar Basti Colony 74 mm, Gulistan Colony 78 mm and Ghulam Muhammad Abad area 91 mm of rainfall.

Sukkur was plunged into darkness as the city received 180mm of rain last night.

PMD revises weather warning

PMD has updated its weather advisory, indicating a shift in the monsoon system from Karachi and lower Sindh towards central and upper Sindh as well as Balochistan.

According to the PMD alert issued on Saturday, the probability of heavy rainfall in Karachi has decreased while the city may still experience light to moderate rains.

Additionally, cities in Sindh such as Jacobabad, Larkana, Dadu, Shikarpur, Ghotki and Sukkur are expected to experience heavy rainfall.

According to the Met Office forecast, this weather system is likely to continue affecting Sindh till the morning of August 19. Earlier, the PMD said it expected thunderstorms in Karachi within the next 24 hours.

However, the latest warning suggests the intensity has eased for the port city.
