Donald Glover cancels rest of Childish Gambino tour

Donald Glover has canceled the rest of his touring commitments with Childish Gambino to focus on his health, including an upcoming surgery.

The Grammy-winning singer of “This Is America” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” he tweeted Friday about recent health issues that have led him to cancel shows in Europe and Australia. The historic Emmy winner said he was hospitalized in Houston last month “to make sure of an ailment that had become evident.”

He continued: “After being tested, it became clear that he would not be performing that night and after further testing, he would not be able to perform the remainder of the US tour in the requested time.”

In September, Glover postponed his New World tour, which included several shows at Crypto.com Arena, “to focus on my physical health for a few weeks.” The “Community” actor was initially due to close out the North American leg of his tour earlier this week before heading overseas. Now, he says, “my road to recovery is something I must seriously face.”

Glover, 41, did not reveal additional details about his health problems in his statement Friday. A representative for multihyphenate did not immediately respond to The Times' request for more information.

It was a “difficult decision” to cancel the rest of the tour, Glover said, adding that fans can get their refunds at the point of purchase. While it's unclear exactly when Glover will pick up the pieces, he wrote, “All I want is to bring this show to the fans and perform.”

“Until then, thank you for the love, privacy and support,” she said.

The New World tour, his first since 2019, was intended to be Glover's last hurrah as his personal musical Childish Gambino, under which he burst onto the music scene. As Childish Gambino, Glover earned 12 Grammy nominations and won five awards, four of which were for his scathing “This Is America.”

Glover released his latest Childish Gambino album, “Bando Stone & the New World,” in July. A month earlier, Glover revealed that he was ready to move on and get rid of that chapter in his career. “It is not satisfactory. And I felt like I didn't need to build this way anymore,” he told the New York Times.

He explained that the decision to retire his alter ego was partially influenced by becoming a father. He shares a child with his wife Michelle White.

“When I put my son on my shoulders, I feel deep joy. “That's real,” he said. “No one on their deathbed will look back and say, 'Thank God I avoided feeling shame.'”
