After a 30-second Super Bowl teaser sent Marvel fans into a frenzy, the full trailer for “Deadpool and Wolverine” was released Monday morning, featuring all the hallmarks of a “Deadpool” movie: Scenes of extravagant fights, breaking the fourth wall and lots of F-bombs.
In the trailer, Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool is recruited by the Time Variance Authority, an organization in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that monitors multiple universes and timelines, to save his universe. From there, Deadpool needs Wolverine's help, and the Wolverine variant he recruits appears to have been responsible for the destruction of his own world.
Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, initially doesn't want to get involved, so he and Deadpool get into a fight before joining forces.
Once they're on the same side, they face a host of opponents, as seen in a bloody fight montage set to Madonna's “Like a Prayer.”
Many fans of the original comics were happy to see Jackman sporting a with comic precision Version of the Wolverine suit in all its sleeveless yellow glory. The film will mark the debut of Deadpool and Wolverine in the MCU, as the original “Deadpool,” “X-Men” and “Wolverine” films were distributed by 20th Century Fox. It is also Marvel's first R-rated film.
The trailer showed additional connections to the MCU with brief shots of what appear to be Ant-Man's helmet and skull, and one of Doctor Strange's portals. The upcoming film, which opens in theaters on July 26, will mark Jackman's return as Wolverine after he hung up his claws with the 2017 film “Logan.”
The new trailer also revealed the film's villain, Cassandra Nova, played by “The Crown” star Emma Corrin. According to the original Marvel comics, Cassandra is the evil twin of Professor Charles Xavier from the “X-Men” series and appears to possess mind control powers. In one shot, she controls Wolverine's body without breaking a sweat after he tries to attack her.
In true Deadpool style, Reynolds' character mocks Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige at the end of the trailer. After Blind Al, Leslie Uggams, offers Deadpool cocaine, he says the boss has given him strict instructions.
“Cocaine is the only thing Feige said was banned,” Deadpool says. “They know all the slang terms, they have a list.”
Before the release of the trailer, Reynolds, who also co-wrote and co-produced the film, shared a video of the post-credits scene that closed “Deadpool 2,” which featured Jackman as Wolverine. “It took me seven years and a lot of begging, but my Deadpool 2 end credit dreams finally came true,” the actor said. wrote Sunday in X.
