Christopher Nolan was elected president of Directors Guild of America on Saturday, assuming the leadership of the Union that represents more than 19,500 members.
Nolan, 55, is among the most successful directors of his generation. His previous film, “Oppenheimer” of 2024, won more than $ 975 million worldwide and won seven Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Film for Nolan. His next film, an adaptation full of “The Odyssey” stars, opens on July 16, 2026, and sold out one year in advance.
In a statement, Nolan said: “To be elected president of the Guild of America is one of the greatest honors of my career. Our industry is experiencing a great change, and I thank the guild's membership for trusting this responsibility.”
Nolan takes care of the leadership of the Guild of Lesli Linka Glatter, who has completed two periods since 2021.
Nolan added in a statement: “I also want to thank President Glatter for his leadership in the last four years. I hope to collaborate with her and the newly chosen board to achieve important creative and economic protections for our members.”
Laura Belsey was also announced on Saturday as National Vice President and Paris Barclay, former president of the DGA, as a secretary treasurer. Additional vice presidents include Todd Holland, Ron Howard, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Seith Mann, Millicent Shelton and Lily Olszewski.
Nolan has been a member of the DGA since 2001 and served as a member of the National Board since 2015. He has been president of the Theatrical Committee of Creative Rights of the Guild and his artificial intelligence committee.
He won the DGA award for the Outstanding Director Achievement in the theatrical feature for “Oppenheimer” and was previously nominated for his “Dunker”, “Inception”, “The Dark Knight” and “Memento” films.
Next year it is expected that the DGA enters new negotiations with the Alliance of Film and Television Producers, which represent studies and transmission services, on its basic agreement.
In a statement, the AMPTP said: “We hope to associate with President Nolan to address the most important problems for the members of the DGA while guaranteeing that our member companies remain competitive in an industry that change rapidly.”
