SARGODHA: A Christian man who became the target of an angry mob in Punjab's Sargodha district for alleged blasphemy succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning, police officials said.
According to regional police officer (RPO) spokesperson Sharik Kamal Siddiqui, Nazir Masih was under treatment at Rawalpindi's CMH hospital for nine days.
Masih also underwent surgery twice but could not survive the injuries inflicted on his head, the spokesman said. An autopsy was performed on him and he will be buried later today.
According to the report, Masih died due to serious head injuries, hospital sources said.
The incident took place on May 25 in Sargodha after an angry mob tortured Masih for alleged blasphemy.
The situation turned violent when angry people attacked the victim's house in the Mujahid Colony area, damaging his belongings and setting fire to a shoe factory established there. They also burned tires and damaged electrical installations in the area.
Following the incident, at least 25 people were detained by the police and the victim and his family were also taken to an undisclosed location after rescuing them.
Sargodha Divisional Commissioner Muhammad Ajmal Bhatti promised that those involved in the incident would be brought to justice after conducting a transparent investigation into the incident.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) also expressed concern over the situation in Sargodha and urged the Punjab Police and the district administration to bring the perpetrators to justice immediately.
