Chris Pine Reflects on Staying Strong After 'Poolman' Criticism

Chris Pine recently talked about his directorial debut. pool man.

Despite negative reviews, Pine described it as the most meaningful experience of his career.

During his appearance in Happy Sad Confused In the podcast, the actor reflected on the personal growth and resilience he gained from the project.

He said: “It's forced me to redouble the joy, as an actor… it's fundamentally about play, right? What we do is essentially become children for hours a day and make believe… there's a mischievous quality to it that I think I never want to lose.”

pool manwhich premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last fall, stars Pine as a pool technician in Los Angeles who stumbles upon a water heist, in a narrative that parodies the 1974 classic Chinatown.

Reflecting on the negative reviews following Toronto, Pine admitted to having doubted the film's quality, but maintained his affection for it after re-watching it.

“After the reviews in Toronto I thought, maybe I just did a lot of shit, so I went back and watched it, and I thought, I love this movie,” he said.
