BAFTA 2024 nominations boost 'Oppenheimer', snub Barbie'

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts released its nominations for 2024 on Thursday, giving a major awards season boost to director Christopher Nolan's “Oppenheimer” while dealing a setback to “Barbie,” the other half. from the giant “Barbenheimer” last summer.

Nolan's sweeping drama about the development of the atomic bomb earned 13 nominations from the British Academy, including best picture, the most nominations for any film this year. “Poor Things,” director Yorgos Lanthimos’ gonzo feminist spin on the Frankenstein story, followed with 11 total nominations, including best picture.

Rounding out the best picture category are Martin Scorsese's period epic “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Justine Triet's riveting courtroom drama “Anatomy of a Fall” and Alexander Payne's 1970s-set boarding school drama “The Holdovers”.

But despite its success with both critics and the public, director Greta Gerwig's blockbuster “Barbie” failed to make the cut for best film or best director. Star Margot Robbie, who plays the iconic titular doll, earned a lead actress nomination alongside Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple),” Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall” and Vivian Oparah (“Rye Lane).

In total, “Barbie” earned just five nominations, which might take some of the wind out of it, though it is still considered a strong contender for a best picture Oscar nomination, particularly considering the category will include 10 films.

In another pair of snubs, Lily Gladstone of “Killers of the Flower Moon” was not nominated despite winning best drama actress earlier this month at the Golden Globes, the first Indigenous woman to do so, while that his co-star Leonardo DiCaprio also failed to land a spot in the leading actor race. In that category, Cillian Murphy was nominated for “Oppenheimer” along with Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Barry Keoghan (“Saltburn”), Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”) Colman Domingo (“Rustin”) and Teo Yoo (“ Past Lives”).

Four of the six best director nominees earned their first nominations in the category, including Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”), Andrew Haigh (“All of Us Strangers”) and Payne (“The Holdovers”). and Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”).

This year's BAFTA ceremony will take place on February 18 at London's Royal Festival Hall, hosted by former “Doctor Who” star David Tennant, and will be broadcast in the US on BritBox.
