ISLAMABAD: At least 18 to 20 independent candidates, who won seats in the National Assembly, have expressed their willingness to support the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the formation of a coalition government.

Citing sources, News reported that the elected MNAs expected to join the PMLN-PPP coalition government were from southern Punjab, Balochistan and Rawalpindi. Sources said the PPP and PML-N had approached several winning independent candidates.

“These MNAs will join the coalition government in the AN. It is also possible that they will present themselves even earlier,” they said.

Party sources said the number of independent members joining the alliance could increase further.

The PPP has kept all its options open and is focusing most of its attention on gaining the support of independent candidates. According to sources, after the elections, contacts between political parties and independent candidates for the formation of a government have intensified.

When contacted, senior PTI leaders said it was all nonsense. “Misinformation is being spread about the issue. Any elected member of the National Assembly supported by the PTI will not support any other party because everyone has seen the fate of former chief ministers Pervez Khattak, Mehmood Khan and other leaders,” they added.
