Armie Hammer sells his truck at CarMax: “I can't afford the gas”

New chapter, new journey: Armie Hammer has sold his beloved pickup truck, the latest fallout from sexual assault allegations and a cannibalism scandal that unraveled his once-promising film career.

The “Social Network” and “Call Me by Your Name” actor posted a video Tuesday of himself taking his four-door pickup truck to sell at used car retailer CarMax. The actor revealed that he lives in a new apartment in Los Angeles but can’t afford to buy gas for his cars. So the great-grandson of oil tycoon Armand Hammer traded it in for a new “small” hybrid car, saying it was “probably going to cost him $10 a month on gas.”

“I keep telling myself that parking is going to be easier and gas is going to be cheaper,” he reasoned.

The “Death on the Nile” actor, who fell from grace in 2021 following a wave of sexual abuse and assault allegations against him, is still reeling from the fallout. Though he repeatedly denied any non-consensual sexual activity, he recently laughed off rumors about his alleged cannibalistic tendencies, noting that he is “grateful” the allegations led to the “death of his career.”

Selling the car is apparently his last attempt to recoup what he lost.

“I've been back in LA for a couple weeks now,” he said Tuesday in the Instagram video, which showed what appeared to be a GMC Sierra Denali parked in a CarMax parking lot.

“This is my truck. I bought it in 2017 as a Christmas gift to myself, because I have owned trucks for a long time and have loved it intensely and have taken it camping and cross country on long road trips several times.

“I took it on one last road trip,” he continued, “to Carmax. This is not a Carmax ad. This is because I’m selling my truck.”

CarMax representatives did not immediately respond to The Times' request for comment Wednesday.

Hammer has said he won't ask his wealthy family for money, saying he made the decision for financial reasons. Since returning to the City of Angels in recent weeks, he said he put between $400 and $500 worth of gas in the truck and “can't afford it anymore.”

The sale, he said, was tied to his 38th birthday on Wednesday and marked “new beginnings” for the embattled star.

“I’m going to start my birthday in a new car, a new apartment, and a new life in LA,” she said in the video. However, she also regretted making the sale, playfully crying that she was “abandoning my baby” and saying that her two children “aren’t happy” about it because of all the memories they made in the vehicle.

Hammer continues to help support his young children with ex-wife Elizabeth Chambers, who divorced him in 2023. He was ordered to pay $1,500 in child support each month because he “doesn’t have the income” to pay more, the New York Post reported. The actor reportedly took a job selling timeshares in the Cayman Islands in 2022 to help pay the bills.
