LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court on Monday indicted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party top leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi in a May 9 riots case.

Qureshi, who was brought to Kot Lakhpat jail from Adiala jail under tight security, has several cases related to May 9, including arson, filed against him at Shadman police station.

The court had summoned the PTI leader to initiate impeachment proceedings against him.

The court has ordered witnesses to be presented at the next hearing, scheduled for July 22.

The former foreign minister, currently incarcerated in Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail on multiple charges, was accused in eight more cases related to the May 9 riots earlier this year.

Apart from these cases, a special court set up under the Official Secrets Act had sentenced Qureshi to 10 years in prison in the encryption case.

However, in June the Islamabad High Court quashed Qureshi's conviction in the encrypted case registered under the Official Secrets Act.

The May 9 riots erupted across much of the country following the arrest of ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan in the £190m deal case. Hundreds of PTI workers and senior leaders were jailed for their involvement in violence and attacks on military installations last year.

During the protests, miscreants attacked civilian and military installations, including Jinnah House and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. The military termed May 9 as “Black Day” and decided to try the protesters under the Army Act.
