Pakistan Railways on Wednesday added at least 40 high-capacity coaches to its fleet that have been produced locally after China fulfilled a promise to transfer its locally manufactured technology to Pakistan.
Chief Executive Officer of Railways Amir Ali Baloch inaugurated the new international standard coaches at Cantt Railway Station in Lahore, according to a statement issued by Pakistan Railways.
He added that the modern design wagons will also be able to move containers from one place to another and have the capacity to transport 70 tons of cargo.
Now, the freight train will also be able to run at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour, the statement said, adding that 820 of these wagons will be incorporated into the railway system until the end of the 2025-26 financial year.
Locally manufacturing wagons will save foreign exchange reserves and increase revenue by over Rs 9 billion every year, the statement mentioned.
“Local manufacturing of wagons is an important step towards self-reliance,” Baloch said at the inauguration ceremony.
Pakistan Railways spokesperson said the department has developed wagons that meet international standards for goods.
