The United Kingdom's car production figures increase in July

The production of cars in the United Kingdom increased for a second consecutive month in July, but a fall in commercial vehicles saw general numbers the previous year.

The figures of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Merchants (SMMT) showed that 69,127 cars were performed during the month, an increase of 5.6% in the same period in 2024.

But the production of commercial vehicles fell by 81.1% compared to 12 months ago, which saw the highest figures for 17 years, reducing the total production number by 10.8% year after year to 72,006.

The SMMT analysis said that the fall in commercial vehicles followed the restructuring of the plants.

The executive president, Mike Hawes, said: “It is still a turbulent moment for the manufacture of cars, with the confidence of the weak consumer, trade flows volatile and massive investment in new technologies underway both here and abroad.

“Given this backdrop, another month of growing cars production is good news, which indicates the underlying resilience of the sector against intense global competition.”

The latest average figures of total vehicle production have fallen 11.7% in the first seven months of the year compared to 2024, although the SMMT said the last forecast predicts a 6.4% trip in 2026.

The production of cars for national markets increased by 13.6% in July, while exports, which represented 79.4% of production, increased by 3.7%.

After three months of falling numbers, exports to the largest individual national market in the USs increased 6.8%to almost 10,000 units, while cars for Turkey (35.4%) and Japan (14.9%) also saw significant increases.

Exports to the EU fell 7.9% and China by 7.1%.
