American Airlines The financial director said Thursday that some travelers are avoiding the Newark Liberty International Airport for other options in the area after a series of recent interruptions, but warned that the impact is “modest.”
“There are probably a certain amount of Newark books on Newark flights to Laguardia, JFK, maybe Philadelphia to a lesser extent,” said CFO Devon May at Wolfe's research conference.
The Federal Aviation Administration this week ordered the airlines to temporarily reduce the flights in Newark to relieve the congestion there, since the carriers deal with a shortage of air traffic controllers, equipment interruptions and construction of the track at the New Jersey airport. Bad weather has also increased interruptions in recent weeks.
American has a market share of approximately 4% in Newark, according to the most recent data of the New York Port Authority and New Jersey, which operates the airport together with the Laguardia airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport, both in Queens, New York.
“There is something that happens there, but I think it's relatively modest when you think about the widest network,” said American May.
United Airlines Dwarf all other airlines in Newark with their participation of almost 70%. That carrier had proactively announced cuts of 35 flights a day earlier this month to put more slack in the system.
Earlier this month, the Secretary of Transportation, Sean Duffy, said that the United States will spend billions to review the aging of the US air traffic control system.
President Donald Trump's tax bill, who approved the Chamber at dawn on early Thursday, includes $ 12.5 billion for modernization and air traffic control personnel.
