US President Joe Biden's performance in the debate has caused a stir within his own party, which has begun to question whether he should be replaced on the ballot before the election. cnn reported.
A senior White House and former President Barack Obama campaign official said: “There is a sense of shock about how he introduced himself at the beginning of this debate. How his voice sounded. He seemed a little disoriented.”
“There will be discussions about whether it should continue,” David Axelrod said in cnn.
Campaign and party officials pointed to Biden's criticism of Trump in the Jan. 6 attack as a moment he got it right. They also took note of his comments on climate change, arguing that it improved over time.
Vice President Kamala Harris said Biden got off to a “slow start” in the presidential debate.
The hoarse-voiced Biden stumbled over his words several times during the first half hour of the debate, but found his footing midway through the debate.
However, Biden still has the support of Democratic officials, who continue to publicly support him, and it would be nearly impossible to replace him unless he himself decides to do so.
And currently, there is no known, serious effort to remove Biden from the top of the presidential ticket.
However, according to cnnBiden would have to step aside if Democrats chose another candidate, and the nomination would be decided by the House if he withdrew.
One operative who has worked on campaigns for more than a decade said, “It's hard to argue that Biden should be our candidate.”
Democrats even shared opinions on who could be Biden's replacement. One of them even said: “If I were Gavin (Newsom) or Gretchen (Whitmer), I would be making decisions tonight.”
But Newsom said he would “never turn his back” on Biden.
“Disaster,” said a legislator cnn“Trump seems reasonable even if he lies at a hundred kilometers per hour. “Biden is unintelligible.”
“I think Joe is doing better than he did in the first 15 minutes and Trump is lying throughout the debate. But I wish Joe would respond more forcefully,” one lawmaker said midway through the debate.
They also wonder why the president missed opportunities to criticize Trump's comments, especially on the issue of abortion.
