Ukraine launched a widespread drone attack on Russia on Wednesday, with air defense units destroying three drones about 38 kilometers (24 miles) south of the Kremlin and 15 over the border region of Bryansk, Russian officials said.

The three attack drones heading toward Moscow were shot down over the city of Podolsk in the Moscow region, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on the Telegram messaging app.

“According to preliminary data, there are no damages or casualties at the site where the debris fell,” Sobyanin said.

No casualties or damage were reported from the drone strike in the border region of Bryansk in southwestern Russia, Alexander Bogomaz, the region's governor, wrote on Telegram.

Russia's state news agency RIA also reported that two drones were destroyed over the Tula region, which borders the Moscow region to the north.

Separately, Vasily Golubev, governor of the Rostov region in southwestern Russia, said air defense forces destroyed a missile launched from Ukraine over the region, with no injuries reported.

It was not clear how many drones and missiles Ukraine launched in total.

Reuters could not independently verify the report. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine.

In recent months, kyiv has stepped up its airstrikes against Russian territory, saying they are aimed at destroying infrastructure key to Moscow's war efforts. It also claims its attacks are a response to Russia's continued attacks on Ukrainian territory.
