Russian authorities said on Sunday that up to 28 people, including a child, were killed in a deadly attack carried out by Kiev on a bakery in the Moscow-controlled Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) in eastern Ukraine, as the Kremlin claimed that the HIMARS rocket system on strike.

Russian forces took control of LPR (the city of Lysychansk) in July 2022 from Ukraine. It is located near the battle front and has been under continuous Ukrainian attacks.

However, the latest attack by Ukrainian forces has been considered the deadliest.

After the Ukrainian bombing, Kremlin Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Ukrainian forces deliberately attacked the bakery because they were “well aware that on Saturdays local residents traditionally come there to buy pastries and groceries, including older people and families with children.

According to the Russian news agency TASThe Ukrainian attack partially damaged the building.

TAS quoted the Emergencies Ministry as saying: “Russian Emergencies Ministry agents have rescued 10 people. Unfortunately, 28 people, including a child, died.”

Authorities noted that the search and rescue mission was underway at the site and “around 65% of the destroyed construction elements have been removed.”

The attack occurred on Saturday afternoon when the area was occupied, according to TASS, and Russian officials claimed that the attack was carried out by a US-built HIMARS multiple launch rocket system.

LPR official Leonid Pasechnik wrote on Telegram on Sunday that those rescued were being treated, adding that Sunday was declared a day of mourning in the LPR for the victims of the barbaric Ukrainian attack on Lysychansk.

In December last year, a Ukrainian bombing raid on the Russian city of Belgorod claimed the lives of 21 people, including children, and injured 110, according to regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov.

That same month, Russian missiles attacked several Ukrainian cities, killing at least 30 people and wounding more than 160.
