The United States is trying to recover the Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, President Donald Trump said Thursday during a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

“We are trying to recover it,” Trump said, referring to Bagram, citing what he called his strategic location near China. “We want that base to return.”

Less than a month after the attacks of September 11, 2001 against the World Trade Center, the United States launched a massive attack against Afghanistan torn by war and, in a few weeks, its forces knocked down the government led by the Taliban in Kabul.

After 20 years of Afghan invasion, NATO troops led by the United States left Afghanistan in 2021. The number of military dead in the United States in the Afghan war since 2001 was approximately 2,500. Shortly after the withdrawal of the United States, Taliban fighters regained control in Afghanistan in September 2021.

“It is the largest investment package of its kind in British history for a country mile,” he added.
