Two best assistants for the mayor of Mexico City have been shot dead in the last attack against public officials in the Latin American country.
The private secretary Ximena Guzman and the advisor José Muñoz were shot dead on Tuesday in an ambush in the morning in the Central neighborhood of Modern, the city authorities said.
The mayor of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, condemned the murders and promised to continue the “relentless struggle of her administration against insecurity.”
“Investigating, clarifying and guaranteeing that there is no impunity is our commitment,” Brugada said during a press conference.
Mexico has one of the highest murder rates on the planet, largely due to the violence driven by drug cartels, but the capital is known for its relative security compared to the rest of the country.
To the report of Mexico City, John Holman, from Al Jazeera, said there were 50 political murders in the country in the first three months of the year alone, although political murders are relatively rare in the capital.
“The reasons for this are still unknown. But there are powerful criminal groups in the capital that fight for the territory and the control of lucrative rackets,” said Holman.
“Politicians can get along the way, as in other parts of the country.”
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, a Brugada ally who previously served as mayor of the capital, said condolences for the murders and said that her government would ensure that “justice is served.”
“We express our solidarity and support for the families of these two people who have worked in our movement for a long time,” said Sheinbaum.
“We know them, we are with their families and we will give it [Brugada] All the support that the city needs from the Mexican government. “
In 2020, the Head of Security of Mexico City, Omar García Harfuch, survived an ambush of armed men who killed two of his bodyguards and a spectator.
