Kenyan police have arrested 33-year-old serial killer Collins Jomaisi Khalusha, suspected of murdering nine women whose decomposing bodies were mutilated and dumped in an abandoned quarry, suspected to be a garbage dump.
Khalusha has admitted to killing 42 women since 2022, including his wife.
The arrest took place at a bar at around 3am on Monday morning, while Khalusha was watching the Euro 2019 final. The recent discovery of mutilated bodies at the Mukuru quarry in Nairobi has sparked shock and anger across the country.
The Director of Criminal Investigation raised his voice and said: “ [He] He confessed to having lured, killed and disposed of 42 female corpses at the landfill, all murdered between 2022 and last Thursday.
These revelations left many Kenyans wondering how 42 people could have been killed in two years without the police knowing. After his arrest, the suspect, Khalusha, directed police to his house, about 100 metres from the crime scene.
Among them were phones, a laptop, two falsified identity cards, women's clothing that belonged to the victims, a machete that was said to have been used to dismember the deceased and nine sacks similar to those used to package the dead.
Police have closed the landfill where the bodies were identified in various states of rigor mortis. All of them died from asphyxiation and the victims ranged in age from 18 to 30 years.
Authorities have confirmed the discovery of nine bodies at the quarry, although local residents and human rights activists continue to search for more bodies with one resident, Joseph Waweru, and his team helping to remove the bodies.
Waweru said he saw 16 badly mutilated bodies during the incident. Police have yet to question Khalusha about the motives behind the bloodbath and he is expected to answer the charges in court on Tuesday.
