Russia-Ukraine war: list of key events, day 940 | Russia-Ukraine war news

As the war enters its 940th day, here are the top developments.

Here is the situation on Sunday, September 22, 2024.

Struggle

  • At least 12 people were injured in Kharkiv after Russian forces attacked a multi-storey building in Ukraine's second-largest city, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said. He added that rescue operations were underway. Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said a child was among the injured.

  • Ukraine announced it had attacked two Russian ammunition depots overnight in the Krasnodar and Tver regions, in strikes that illustrated its growing ability to attack targets deep inside Russia.

  • A Russian drone strike has killed two people in the Ukrainian city of Nikopol, the regional governor said.
  • In Kurakhove, one of the focal points of Russia's slow advance through Ukraine's Donetsk region, one person was killed in a Russian artillery strike, regional prosecutors said.
  • Authorities in Ukraine's Sumy region said a Russian aircraft attacked an energy infrastructure in the town of Shostka. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
  • The Russian Defense Ministry said its air defense units destroyed 15 drones launched by Ukraine overnight against the Rostov region in the south, as well as against the Kursk, Astrakhan, Belgorod and Voronezh regions. There were no reports of casualties.

Politics and diplomacy

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said an end to the war with Russia depended on a “decision” by kyiv’s Western allies to provide the necessary weapons and permission to use them. He said his meetings next week in the United States were “crucial” to ensuring Ukraine’s defence capability.

  • Russia will not take part in any follow-up summit to the “peace summit” hosted by Switzerland in June because the process constitutes a “fraud”, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, adding that Moscow is ready to discuss “truly serious proposals” that take into account the “situation on the ground”.
  • Ukraine’s allies stepped up their military support in early September, Zelensky said. “We can feel the difference,” added the Ukrainian leader, whose army is struggling to stop the advance of Russian forces in the east.
  • Zelenskyy dismissed a peace plan for Ukraine proposed by China and Brazil earlier this year, saying it was too vague and had no specific actions or stages explained.
