Russia accused both nations of “complete disregard for international law” and called the airstrikes “another example of Anglo-Saxon perversion of UN Security Council resolutions.”
Russia sharply criticized the United States and the United Kingdom on Friday for launching military strikes against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, according to a statement issued by the Press Service of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The US and UK air forces confirmed the strikes on Thursday night, in retaliation for Houthi attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea during the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova expressed concern on Telegram, accusing Washington and London of “complete disregard for international law” and saying the airstrikes were “another example of the Anglo-Saxon perversion of the resolutions of the UN Security Council”.
In a televised briefing, Zakharova emphasized the “direct threat to global peace and security” posed by the attacks in Yemen, and urged the international community to condemn the actions of the United States and Britain.
Russia's Permanent Mission to the United Nations has formally requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to address the issue, scheduled for today.
