Residents reveal the smart features of the world's major cities in 2024

Rising global temperatures and environmental changes are obstacles for cities trying to embrace a sustainable future. Every year, the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) ranks the world's smartest cities.

He BBC Interviewed residents of five of the top-ranked cities in 2024.

Surprisingly, no cities from North America or Africa made it into the top 20 this year. Most of the cities in the top 20 are from Europe and Asia.

Talking with him BBCResidents highlighted the features of the top-ranked cities that make them feel “smart.”

Canberra, Australia

According to the Smart Cities Index 2024, Canberra, the Australian capital, ranks third due to its low air pollution, amount of green spaces and a high sense of inclusion among minority citizens.

Additionally, Bryden and David Campbell, co-founders of Brand Rebellion, praised the city's condition.

“What really stands out is the strong sense of community,” Bryden said.

“There is a genuine connection and a willingness to help and support others, making it a warm and welcoming place to call home.

“Canberra is ahead of the curve on clean energy and renewable initiatives. The city has ambitious targets to achieve net zero emissions by 2045, and this is evident in the continued electrification and adoption of renewable energy sources across the region,” he added.

David, for his part, commented on the initiatives taken by the city.

“The city's smart city initiatives, including smart lighting systems, waste management and traffic management, significantly improve the efficiency and sustainability of city services,” said David.

Canberra has high-speed internet that supports general connectivity and the growth of remote working.

Singapore

According to the index, Singapore is ranked fifth thanks to its high safety scores, thanks to CCTV systems and high connectivity that facilitate schooling and traffic control. Residents in this area are satisfied with the up-to-date technology.

“Singapore's public transport system has been greatly improved through the strategic use of open data and contactless payment technologies,” said Firdaus Syazwani, a long-time resident and founder of personal finance resource Dollar Bureau.

“Together, this makes travel faster and exceptionally convenient for both residents and visitors,” he added.

Kirk Westaway, resident and executive chef of two-Michelin-starred restaurant JAAN, also highlights the small details that make a big difference on public transport.

“[Quick] “Contactless payments and real-time data mean you don't have to wait around wondering if you'll get to your destination on time,” he said.

In addition, Westway sheds light on Singapore’s sustainability and smart framework.

“Technology is being leveraged to drive sustainability efforts and urban agriculture is becoming a way of life here,” he said.

Lausanne, Switzerland

All three Swiss cities are included in the 2024 ranking, including Zurich in first place and Geneva in fourth. Smaller Lausanne is still overachieving, taking seventh place in the index, despite its population of around 150,000.

“I love living in Lausanne because it is a small city with all the amenities of a big city,” says Olivia Bosshart, PR Manager for Lausanne Tourism.

“Everything is within walking distance. From the station, it's only 15 minutes to the lake. [Lake Geneva] and 15 minutes from the city center,” he added.

Meanwhile, the city has invested in parks and has also taken initiatives in the digital sector.

“The City of Lausanne is committed to reducing its digital footprint and supports a digital transition of its administration,” explained Alexane Bornoz, Communications Director of the City of Lausanne, also highlighting the city's efforts to offer digital services to residents and visitors.

“A mobile app is available to find practical information on visiting and living in Lausanne,” explains Bornoz.

London, United Kingdom

London ranks eighth and remains on the list thanks to its ease of online services and affordable Wi-Fi.

“With excellent transport, both by tube, buses, boats and active travel schemes such as bikes and scooters, London is a fun place to be with plenty to do every day of the week including restaurants, pubs, nightlife, concerts and more,” said Emma Orr of Winning Business UK Ltd., which has worked with all 32 London boroughs on electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Abu Dhabi takes tenth place on this year's list thanks to its efficient and accessible transport and high level of sanitation in the poorest areas of the city.

“The integration of vehicle charging infrastructure and autonomous driving solutions in the city has made commuting seamless and efficient,” said Dhanvin Sriram, an Abu Dhabi resident and founder of AI tool Prompt Vibes.

“The smart mobility hub ensures seamless management of land, sea, air and rail transport. This advanced system not only reduces traffic congestion, but also minimises environmental impact,” he added.
