Police search for gunman who left seven injured in Kentucky highway shooting | Gun Violence News

Authorities are searching for a man suspected of shooting at cars traveling on a rural stretch of I-75.

Police in Kentucky are searching for a shooter after seven people were injured on a rural stretch of a major highway.

They had been driving along the highway shortly before 6 p.m. (10:00 GMT) not far from London, the city's mayor, Randall Weddle, said on Facebook.

Kentucky State Police spokesman Scottie Pennington previously said between four and six people were injured.

Local news station WYMT said there were “multiple serious injuries” but no confirmed deaths.

The shooting temporarily shut down Interstate 75, a major north-south highway that runs through the eastern half of the United States, in both directions.

Authorities said they were searching for Joseph Couch, 32, in rough terrain near the highway. Local media said the shooting had come from a wooded area or an overpass.

“Please consider him armed and dangerous,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post about Couch. “Do not attempt to approach him.”

The incident comes days after two students and two teachers were killed in a shooting at a school in Georgia.

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with murder in the attack, while his father, who allegedly bought him the gun as a gift, has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter.

Gun violence is common in the United States, a country where there are more guns than people.
