France won their first gold medal of their home Games in the men's rugby sevens, while Belgium's Remco Evenepoel continued his meteoric rise with gold in the men's individual time trial.
France, the host country of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, was among the countries to win a gold medal on the opening day of the Games.
Here's a rundown of some of Saturday's medal winners:
Dupont, the hero of France's resounding rugby gold medal victory
France claimed their first ever gold medal at the Paris Olympics – and the first of any kind in men's rugby sevens – as Antoine Dupont led them to a shock 28-7 victory over two-time defending champions Fiji on an unforgettable night at the Stade de France.
Fiji had won all 17 of their previous matches at the Olympics and took the lead thanks to Joseva Talacolo.
But the home fans erupted when Rayan Rebbadj, who had scored twice in the semi-final win over South Africa earlier, darted between the posts to level the scores at half-time.
Superstar scrum-half Dupont then came off the bench to assist Aaron Grandidier Nkanang, who lunged in to make it 21-7.
The 67,000 spectators could barely control themselves as France controlled the ball in the final minutes and nearly blew the roof off when Dupont crashed in on the game's final play to make the final score 28-7.
The Fijians settled for silver, while in the previous bronze medal match, South Africa beat Australia 26-19 in the final play of a thrilling third-place playoff.
American Perry Baker also made headlines by becoming the all-time leading male scorer in Olympic rugby sevens when he scored his 10th try in the USA's 17-14 loss to Ireland in the 5-8 play-off.
Evenepoel and Brown take gold in road cycling events
On the wet and slippery roads of Paris, Belgian Remco Evenepoel won the gold medal in the men's individual time trial, while Australian Grace Brown triumphed in the women's competition.
Evenepoel added an Olympic gold to his world title as the 24-year-old clocked a time of 36 minutes 12.16 seconds over 32.4km (20.1 miles) in torrential rain to beat Italy's Filippo Ganna by 14.92 seconds.
Evenepoel's compatriot Wout van Aert completed the podium with a third place.
In the women's road race, Brown claimed Australia's first gold medal at this year's Olympics by sweeping away the field, using power and bike handling unmatched by her rivals throughout the competition.
The Australian won the Pont Alexandre III course by a margin of 1 minute and 31.59 seconds, while Britain's Anna Henderson took silver. Several riders slipped and fell on wet, cobbled bends, and world champion Chloe Dygert settled for bronze.
Two medals for France in judo
Japan's Natsumi Tsunoda won gold in the women's under 48kg (105.8lb) category.
Three-time champion Tsunoda defeated reigning world champion Baasankhuu Bavuudorj of Mongolia, who took the silver medal. Shirine Boukli, who won France's first medal at the Olympic Games in her country, shared the bronze with Sweden's Tara Babulfath.
Kazakhstan's Yeldos Smetov was the champion in the men's under 60kg (132.2lb) event.
Smetov gave Kazakhstan its first gold medal in Paris, while France's Luka Mkheidze took the silver medal. The bronze medals went to Japan's Nagayama Ryuju and Spain's Francisco Garrigos.
