Flamengo defeated Palmeiras 1-0 to win the Copa Libertadores, becoming the most successful Brazilian team in the history of South America's top club competition by lifting the title for the fourth time.

A second-half header from Flamengo centre-back Danilo settled a difficult match at Lima's Estadio Monumental on Saturday – the fifth Libertadores final in the last six seasons involving two Brazilian clubs.

Flamengo's victory avenged their 2-1 defeat to Palmeiras in the 2021 Libertadores final and leaves the famous Rio de Janeiro club firmly on track for a treble of trophies in 2025.

Flamengo started the year with a victory in the Brazilian Super Cup and only needs two points from the two remaining league games to clinch the Brazilian national championship.

Flamengo's third victory in the tournament since 2019, and fourth overall, put them level with Argentina's Estudiantes, three behind another Argentine club, Independiente, with seven titles.

Palmeiras, meanwhile, were left to ruin a golden opportunity to equalize in the 89th minute, when Vitor Roque shot over the crossbar from close range.

That was possibly Palmeiras' best opportunity in a rather conflictive final, plagued by 33 fouls and seven yellow cards shared between the two teams.

In a difficult first half, Flamengo enjoyed the best opportunities, with Bruno Henrique the first to set off the alarm in the Palmeiras ranks with a shot in the 15th minute that flew high and wide.

Flamengo continued to find space on the flanks and moments later, Samuel Lino threatened to break the deadlock, cutting in from the left and firing a shot wide.

This, however, was the best it got for Flamengo in the first half, and the men in red and black were lucky not to be down to 10 men after 30 minutes, following a melee that broke out when Palmeiras defender Bruno Fuchs brought down Flamengo star Giorgian de Arrascaeta.

As tempers flared, Flamengo's Chilean international Erick Pulgar flew in and kicked Fuchs, but somehow escaped with only a yellow card.

Flamengo once again looked the more threatening team after the break, as they struggled to create clear-cut chances.

The breakthrough finally came in the 67th minute, when Arrascaeta took an attractive corner from the right.

Danilo, who was inexplicably left unmarked, rose unopposed to finish off the winning goal.
