Overnight landslide in Sherman Oaks prompts evacuation

Videos show homes damaged and lost when large rocks fell and slid from the hills in Sherman Oaks.

Local Los Angeles media reported Wednesday that three homes were damaged after a powerful landslide prompted the evacuation of residents in Sherman Oaks overnight.

Authorities said firefighters received reports of downed trees and wires in the backyard of a residence on North Ventura Canyon Avenue early Wednesday morning, observing a slope falling toward homes in the area.

One home that was under construction suffered large-scale damage and, according to officials, will be tagged red, while other homes were tagged yellow.

According Eyewitness NewsCody Weireter, an official with the Los Angeles Fire Department, described: “There is large debris of mud, vegetation, trees… and rocks and concrete that just fell on one of the houses that were under construction.”

He told the outlet: “A portion of the outdoor pool area of one of the homes has separated from the main foundation, and obviously that's one of our biggest concerns right now.”

Videos posted to social media showed damaged homes and significant damage when large boulders slid from the hills.

The authorities indicated that during the landslide, people were inside the houses, however, no one was injured.

Firefighters have yet to determine the cause of the landslide.

They used pumps to pump water from a pool to remove additional weight and stress from the slope, authorities said, cited by local media.

Firefighters will continue to inspect the area with drones, officials said.
