Olympic gold: Japan's Horigome on skateboard and Britain's Pidcock on mountain bike | Paris 2024 Olympics news

Day 3 of the Olympics: Gold for Japan in skateboarding and men's gymnastics, Canada wins its first judo title and Great Britain wins a thrilling mountain bike event.

Japan's Yuto Horigome retained his Olympic title in men's street skateboarding in Paris, taking the top spot with his final trick in a tense final.

American Jagger Eaton upgraded his Tokyo bronze to silver, while compatriot Nyjah Huston claimed the final podium spot on Monday.

Horigome claimed gold in the nick of time with a flawless slide down the 10-step circular railing and a smile, underlining Japan's dominance in the sport a day after compatriot Coco Yoshizawa won the women's event.

“It was difficult to get to the podium this time,” Horigome said. “The level of skating is amazing.”

Eaton used some of his best material on all five tricks, but was unable to catch Horigome as the American fell on his final attempt.

The competition took place under clear skies and sweltering heat after rain forced the event to be postponed on Saturday, as competitors kept their cool in front of another packed stadium at the La Concorde venue.

Horigome looked the favourite, as he made fantastic use of the course's 18 features in his first round of the final. But Huston had the lead before five tricks, as he capped his second round with a nollie backside 180.

Huston, one of the biggest names in American skateboarding since retired great Tony Hawk, was hungry for redemption after a surprise seventh-place finish at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, and cemented his lead with a pair of high-scoring tricks.

But Eaton briefly took over the top spot in the standings with a nollie 270 slide on his fourth attempt.

Horigome looked like he would miss out on the podium altogether after crashing on three of his first four attempts, but he pulled off a bit of magic to leapfrog the rest of the field at the last moment, as the Japanese fans cheered him on.

Olympic skateboarding will continue with the men's and women's park events on August 6 and 7.

Japan takes gold in men's artistic gymnastics team after dramatic final

Daiki Hashimoto turned heartbreak into unimaginable joy as he overcame a fall from the pommel horse to propel Japan to the gymnastics gold medal, beating China in a thrilling men's team final.

While Hashimoto led Japan to its eighth men's team title at the Games, Team USA was celebrating its first Olympic team medal since 2008 by claiming bronze.

Just when it seemed like China had the title in the bag, leading Japan by more than three points with just three more performances remaining on their final apparatus, the high bar, Su Weide fell twice during her routine, turning the title race into a nail-biting brawl.

At the end of the match, Japan emerged victorious with a total of 259,594 points, less than one point ahead of China.

The US men put in a superb performance and took bronze after landing most of their shots in the competition.

Deguchi becomes Canada's first judo champion

Christa Deguchi won gold in the women's under-57kg (126lbs) category to give Canada its first Olympic judo title before Azerbaijan's Hidayat Heydarov disappointed a partisan crowd by triumphing in the men's under-73kg (161lbs) final.

Reigning world champion Heydarov beat France's Joan-Benjamin Gaba with a golden ippon in a marathon final lasting nine minutes and 24 seconds at the Champ-de-Mars Arena.

Heydarov tried several times to catch his breath as the fight progressed and gave his opponent a kiss on the forehead after celebrating the victory.

Gaba, ranked 35th in the world and competing in his first Olympics, shocked everyone by fighting his way to the final after defeating London 2012 gold medallist in the under-66kg (146lb) category, Lasha Shavdatuashvili of Georgia, in the round of 32.

In the women's event, Sarah-Leonie Cysique added a bronze medal to the host country's list after losing to Deguchi in the semi-final. In the final, Deguchi eliminated Huh Mi-mi after the South Korean was penalised for a third time.

After becoming Canada's first world judo champion in 2019, Deguchi struck again and became Canada's first Olympic judo champion.

Britain's Pidcock wins thrilling race to retain mountain bike title

Britain's Tom Pidcock fought back from a puncture to retain his Olympic men's mountain bike title after a thrilling battle with France's Victor Koretzky.

World champion Pidcock, who won gold in Tokyo, found himself 35 seconds behind after suffering a front tyre puncture on the fourth of eight laps of the 4.4km (2.7 mile) circuit carved out of Elancourt Hill.

But he recovered and then came face to face with Koretzky on the final lap, when he again had to make up ground before pulling away with the finish line in sight.

The partisan crowd booed as he crossed the line nine seconds ahead of silver medallist Koretzky, while South African Alan Hatherly finished third to take the bronze medal.

The Olympic gold medal was an early birthday present for Pidcock, who turns 25 on Tuesday.

The British cyclist, who had to withdraw from the Tour de France about two weeks ago when he contracted COVID-19, joined Paola Pezzo and Julien Absalon as the only riders with two mountain bike gold medals at the Summer Games.
