Los Angeles: An earthquake of 7.3-Magnitude hit Wednesday on the coast of the American state of Alaska, which caused a warning of Tsunami, said the United States geological service (USGS).

The earthquake occurred at approximately 12:37 local time (2037 GMT), with the epicenter located about 54 miles (87 kilometers) south of the island city of Sand Point, according to USGS. The earthquake had a relatively shallow depth of 20.1 kilometers.

The authorities issued a Tsunami warning for southern Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula after the tremor.

“A tsunami has been confirmed and some impacts are expected,” said Tsunami's National Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska.

The warning was issued for “southern Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula, the Pacific coasts of Kennedy's entrance, Alaska (40 miles southwest of Homer) to Unimak Pass, Alaska (80 miles northeast of Unalaska),” said the center.

According to the initial data, Tsunami's warnings did not extend to other regions, the NTWC added.

Alaska is located inside the Pacific Ring of the Pacific seismically active.

The remote state was reached by an earthquake of 9.2 magnitude in March 1964, the strongest recorded in North America. He devastated the city of Anchorage and triggered a tsunami that hit the Gulf of Alaska, the west coast of the United States and Hawaii.

More than 250 people were killed by the earthquake and the resulting tsunami.

An earthquake of the magnitude of 7.2 hit the Alaska Peninsula in July 2023, although important damage was not reported.
