Former world champion Lewis Hamilton survived a late charge from Max Verstappen to win his home GP, ending the longest winless streak of his racing career.
Lewis Hamilton beat Max Verstappen at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone to claim his first motorsport win since Saudi Arabia on December 5, 2021, 56 races ago.
“I've been waiting for this,” Hamilton shouted on Sunday after the British driver crossed the line in his Mercedes for his ninth win at Silverstone, breaking a tie with Michael Schumacher for the most victories at one track.
McLaren's Lando Norris was third.
Following his record 104th Formula One win, Hamilton, 39, cried as he fell into his father's arms as the home crowd roared.
“Since 2021, every day [I’ve been] “I'm fighting, training and putting in all my effort, working as hard as I can,” said Hamilton, who will leave for Ferrari at the end of this season.
“This is my last race with the team. I love them so much. I will be eternally grateful to everyone at Mercedes and to the amazing fans.”
Hamilton, who started second on the grid behind teammate George Russell, recorded his 13th consecutive podium appearance at his home track.
Russell, winner a week earlier in Austria, was forced to retire due to a hydraulic problem.
Hamilton passed Russell on lap 18 and was passed by Norris two laps later.
But a poorly executed pit stop by McLaren allowed Hamilton to regain the lead with 12 laps to go.
Hamilton finished 1.465 seconds ahead of Verstappen, who overtook Norris with three laps to go as the race finished in sunshine after a brief shower.
Red Bull's Verstappen extended his lead in the drivers' standings over Norris by three points to 84 points despite failing to win back-to-back races for the first time since Silverstone and Austria in 2022.
McLaren's Oscar Piastri was fourth, while Ferrari's Carlos Sainz was fifth and Haas' Nico Hulkenberg was sixth.
