Poland is giving its capital, Warsaw, a major makeover as part of a £7bn megaproject.

The project, called Solidarity Transportation Axis or Central Communications Port, contemplates the modernization of the city's transportation networks that includes the construction of a new airport from scratch.

The new airport will be built 40 kilometers southwest of the capital and will include two runways, terminal buildings, shops, parking lots and connecting roads.

The project website says: “The overall vision is to create an airport that is prudent, well-planned, appropriately designed, efficient for airlines and comfortable for passengers.”

The new megaproject will also build 1,119 miles of new high-speed rail lines, in addition to modernizing 1,491 miles of existing lines.

The new rail network will be made up of 10 main corridors and will create a new controlled-access highway network connection, significantly reducing travel times between Warsaw and its surrounding areas.

Additionally, a high-speed connection to Frankfurt, Germany is also in the works, which will also make international travel easier and less dependent on air travel.

The website says: “The CPK rail system will be based on approximately 2,000 km of new high-speed rail (HSR) lines and 3,700 km of modernized rail lines. The completion of the CPK rail program is one of the largest engineering projects underway in Central Europe.”

Construction of the airport began in October 2023, but the first phase is not expected to be completed until late 2027, along with some sections of the railway lines.
