Delegates to the Democratic National Convention will hold a virtual vote from Aug. 1-5 to formally elect Vice President Kamala Harris as the party's nominee for president in the Nov. 5 election, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) said Tuesday.
Nearly 4,700 delegates will cast their votes electronically from home or wherever they are and must return their ballots by Monday 5 August.
Harris was given the job of presumptive Democratic nominee for the presidential election after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race under immense pressure on July 21 and then endorsed the vice president for president.
But before Biden's endorsement, Harris had already garnered support from other Democrats and began campaigning for the November election.
USA Today reported that within 24 hours of Biden dropping out of the race, Harris had secured more than the 1,976 delegates needed to be officially nominated.
The DNC said more than 3,923 delegates from across the United States have asked to see Harris on the ballot for the Democratic presidential nomination.
According USA TodayHarris had the support of 99% of eligible voting delegates, and more than 84% of delegates had signed on to have the vice president serve as the Democratic Party's nominee.
The DNC had stated that Democrats who wanted to have their names on the ballot had to obtain the signatures of 300 delegates (no more than 50 from any one state) by Tuesday.
The DNC later revealed that no Democrat other than Harris managed to gather 300 signatures for the ballot.
Harris is set to emerge as the Democratic presidential nominee when virtual voting ends on Monday; she will accept the nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, which runs from August 19 to August 22.
