KABUL: Daesh claimed responsibility on Tuesday for a suicide attack in the Afghan capital that killed six people the previous day, saying it had targeted the Taliban government's prosecution service.

“The suicide bomber waited until the moment when the prosecutor's employees were leaving their shifts” before detonating the explosive in the middle of a crowd, Daesh's Amaq media wing said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app.

On Monday evening, Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran said six people had been killed and 13 more wounded in the bombing on the southern outskirts of the capital.

However, the group's media wing put the total number of dead and wounded at “more than 45” and said the attack was carried out “to avenge Muslims held in Taliban jails.”

Violence has decreased in Afghanistan since the Taliban took power in 2021, but Daesh's regional chapter has frequently attacked foreigners, civilians and Taliban officials.
