  • Installed solar energy generation is around 560 million kilowatts.
  • More than 64% of global NEV sales came from China in September 2023.
  • Its forest cover has increased from 21.63% to 24.02%.

In a bid to reduce pollution, China made steady progress in 2023 toward its “dual carbon” goal, which is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 and before that reach peak carbon emissions by 2030.

The Xinhua news agency reported several key figures related to China’s achievements in green development last year.

In the renewable energy sector, according to the National Energy Administration (NEA), China’s total installed renewable energy capacity increased by 20.8% year-on-year, exceeding 1.4 billion kilowatts at the end of October last year. This represents 49.9% of the country’s total installed power generation capacity.

As of the end of November 2023, installed solar power generation was around 560 million kilowatts, a year-on-year increase of 49.9%, the National Energy Administration said.

According to the China Passenger Vehicle Association (CPCA), wholesale sales of new energy vehicles (NEV) in China, the global leader in the NEV industry, totaled 8.88 million units in 2023, a notable expansion from 38 % year-on-year.

As of September 2023, more than 64% of global NEV sales came from China, according to the 2023 World New Energy Vehicle Congress.

On the other hand, China celebrated its first National Ecology Day on August 15, 2023. According to China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment, from 2013 to 2022, carbon dioxide emissions per unit of China’s GDP decreased by 34.4% and its PM2.5 density fell. 57%.

From 2013 to 2022, its forest cover increased from 21.63% to 24.02%, reported the National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China.

The Ministry of Ecology said that in the first 11 months of 2023, the proportion of days with good air quality was 85.8% in 339 cities, an increase of 3.3 percentage points over the same period in 2019.
