At least 37 people have been killed and dozen more injured in an accident that involved two buses in the western region of Bolivia in Bolivia, police and local authorities said.

The accident occurred on Saturday at 7 am local time (11:00 GMT) on the route between the cities of Uyuni and Colchani, when one of the vehicles deviated in the approximate lane.

Uyuni is the entrance door to the Salar de Uyuni, a great tourist attraction and the largest salt floor in the world more than 10,000 square meters (3,900 square miles).

“As a result of this fatal accident, we have 39 people injured in four hospitals in the city of Uyuni, and 37 people have lost their lives,” a spokesman for the Potosi Departmental Police Command told journalists.

Police staff are working to identify the people who were killed and those who were injured and hospitalized, the spokesman added.

One of the buses was heading to Oruro, where one of the most important Carnival celebrations in Latin America is currently being held.

Police officers eliminated the survivors of the steel remains, according to the images taken by Radio Uyuni, which showed several bodies covered with blankets scattered by the high Andean plains.

A police spokesman said that one of the two drivers, who survived the accident, was seen by passengers who consumed alcohol.

The mountainous roads, little maintained and little supervised in Bolivia are some of the most mortal in the world, killing an average of 1,400 people every year.
