A 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Mindanao island in the Philippines on Saturday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.

The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.21 miles), according to GFZ.

The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude at 6.8.

The US National Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat from the quake.

The Philippine seismological agency PHIVOLCS said in an advisory that it did not expect damage from the offshore quake but warned there could be aftershocks.

The Philippines is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where volcanic activity and earthquakes are common.
