Seven years ago, after visiting Los Angeles almost all summer to spend time with family and friends, I threw myself and finally moved from Las Vegas to Los Angeles two weeks later, I had my first car accident. A driver crashed into the back of my car while I was in a traffic light during the peak time. When I told my co -workers, they made sure that I was fine (fortunately) and then they said, indifferently: “Welcome to Los Angeles, now you are local.”
Of course, I did not feel like a real place until years later, when I solidified my community of Los Angeles, my group of friends, my favorite neighborhoods and my dear local places.
But I still wonder: what makes someone a place in Los Angeles?
Is it when you can collect the instructions to a tourist without reviewing their GPS? Or when your favorite suppliers in your local farmers market automatically know your name and order? Is it when a mild earthquake does not make you shiver? How about when you realize that you have tried at least 75% of the tacos in the best tacos list of the Times? Is it when you resonate strongly with the lyrics of Kendrick Lamar in his song “Dodger Blue” (“Don't say you hate angels when you don't go beyond 10”)?
