Liquids can remain in hand luggage, but 100 ml restrictions remain in place for now – Business Traveler

Birmingham Airport has provided an update on liquid restrictions in hand luggage, following the introduction of new scanning equipment.

Customers can now carry an unlimited number of 100ml bottles in their carry-on luggage, which can be placed loose in luggage and do not need to be removed for security screening.

This is a change from the previous rule (still in force at many UK airports) which states that “containers must not contain more than 100ml and must be in a single clear, resealable plastic bag, containing no more than a liter and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm”.

However, the airport is still waiting for regulatory approval to allow customers to carry liquid containers of up to two liters in their carry-on luggage, part of a promise made by the Department of Transportation when it announced the end of the “goods” rule. “small vanity” in 2022.

Birmingham Airport completed the installation of next-generation scanners in time for the government's original June 1 deadline (although that period has now been extended to one year), but the work continues construction of new £60m airport security zone.

The airport advises that “the security queue area may begin on the ground floor,” and all customers traveling by train must proceed to the ground floor upon arrival.

Commenting on the news, Al Titterington, director of terminal operations at Birmingham Airport, said:

“Once we receive regulatory approval that will allow two liters to be carried as carry-on luggage at Birmingham Airport, we will be able to transform the customer experience with this world-class security screening equipment.

“Meanwhile, customers are reminded that they can only carry up to 100 ml in their hand luggage and, under no circumstances, bottles/cans of water, soft drinks or soft drinks larger than 100 ml.

“Plastic bags for liquids are not required, and electrical appliances can also remain in hand luggage, as they no longer need to be presented separately.”

London City Airport relaxed rules on liquids in hand luggage in April last year, and other airports that did so recently include Aberdeen and Highland and Island Airports.
