Highlands and Islands airports to relax rules on liquids in hand luggage from June 1 – Business Traveler

Highlands and Islands Airports (HIAL) has confirmed that departing passengers will benefit from relaxed rules at security checks from next month.

The group has been modernizing its new generation C2+ level control equipment at its airports, which means that from June 1, passengers will be able to carry liquids in containers of up to two liters in their hand luggage, and will be able to leave devices electronics in their bags during display.

Additionally, HIAL has invested in new body scanners “to improve the security experience” at its Benbecula, Inverness, Islay, Kirkwall, Stornoway and Sumburgh.

HIAL operates 11 airports across the region and said the total investment for the introduction of new security equipment was around £1 million.

Last month, Aberdeen International Airport became the latest UK facility to relax rules on liquids in hand luggage.

Commenting on the news, Darren MacLeod, director of safety, compliance and security at HIAL, said:

“We advise all passengers to check individual airport guidelines and allow extra time to go through security this summer. “All security teams are completing their training to ensure the transition goes smoothly and staff will be available at airports to assist passengers with the new process.”
