Finnair has officially adopted Avios as the currency of its Finnair Plus loyalty program.
The airline announced plans to use Avios as Finnair Plus currency last summer and in December confirmed that it would adopt the currency from March 2024.
The flag carrier joins oneworld partners British Airways, Iberia and Qatar Airways in using Avios as currency for its frequent flyer programs.
Finnair said its more than four million loyalty program members would be able to transfer Avios between British Airway's Finnair Plus and Executive Club accounts “from later this spring.”
The change also sees Finnair adopt a spend-based model for earning Avios, similar to the already in force for the Iberia Plus and British Airways Executive Club programs.
An advantage of joining the Avios ecosystem is that members will see increased availability of award seats.
There will be four guaranteed economy class seats and two business class seats (when available) on flights within Europe, and a minimum of four economy seats, two premium economy seats (when available) and two business class seats on flights between Europe and Asia and North America. and Dubai.
And major new benefits are also being introduced to reward members “within the tiers.” For example, Finnair Plus Silver members will receive two lounge passes when they earn 20,000 Tier Points.
Commenting on the news, Ole Orvér, Finnair's chief commercial officer, said:
“The adoption of Avios as our new loyalty currency will bring fantastic new benefits to our four million Finnair Plus members around the world.
“We are always looking for new ways to improve the customer proposition to earn the loyalty of Finnair's most loyal customers and we know that this historic change will open the door to even more opportunities.”
