British Airways has announced plans to move the tier points collection period for all Executive Club members to early April.
Currently, members have different billing periods depending on the month they joined the program: the 12-month period begins on the 8th of the calendar month in which a member takes their first flight, or the 8th of the calendar month next if a member joins after the 8th of the month.
But on April 1, 2025, the tier point earning year for all Executive Club members will begin on April 1 and end on March 31.
Before the change there will be a transition period starting in April 2024. BA has published an FAQ section on its websitebut in general for those members with charging periods ending in March 2024 or earlier, the airline says that “there will be no changes to the way Tier status is obtained and any status obtained within this period will be valid for at least 12 months”.
For those with collection periods starting in April 2024, things are a little more complicated. Your 2024/2025 Tier Points collection year will be shortened to end on March 31, 2025, and “a Tier Points adjustment will be added to your Executive Club account during your new Tier Points collection year.”
BA said that “if you earn enough tier points during your tier point collection year to upgrade or renew your tier status, this will be valid until April 30, 2026 (new membership card expiry date)” .
The following example has been given:
“Your current tier point collection period begins on July 9, 2023 and ends on July 8, 2024.
“Your tier point collection year resets on July 8, 2024, which means your next tier point collection year begins on July 9, 2024 and ends on March 31, 2025 instead of March 8. July 2025.
“The tier points you earned between April 1, 2024 and July 8, 2024 will contribute to the overlap of your qualification periods and will be applied as a tier point adjustment.
“During the transition, to recognize a full year of earning tier points on flights toward your tier status, we will grant you the tier point adjustment. This is calculated by adding the level points you earned between April 1, 2024 and July 8, 2024.”
BA says moving to a calendar period for collecting tier points will “make it easier for you, your colleagues and your family to manage travel plans”.
The move follows changes made last year to the way members earn Avios by flying, moving away from the previous model of Avios earning linked to distance travelled, in favor of a spend-based system.
British Airways will change the way you earn Avios from October
