Amsterdam Schiphol has launched a new app that allows travelers to access information directly from their Apple Watch.
The app includes details on departure and arrival times, check-in counters, gate numbers and flight status updates.
Schiphol said more than 1.6 million travelers have downloaded its established iPhone and Android apps, and data showing that 30 percent of iPhone users have paired an Apple Watch means a watch app had been ” the next logical step.”
The first version of the Schipol Apple Watch app is now available: users who download the Schiphol app and have paired an iPhone with their Apple Watch will automatically have access to the app on their watch.
Schiphol said it was increasingly applying intelligent and self-learning (AI) algorithms to make departure, transfer and arrival processes more transparent and predictable, and this data is fed into the app.
“Last year, we installed thousands of motion sensors on the ceiling of departure and arrival halls,” said David de Vries, Schiphol App product owner.
“By applying self-learning algorithms, we are getting better and better at predicting crowds and wait times. Our ambition is to make the entire journey, from home to the holiday destination and back, transparent and predictable.”
Last year, the airport announced a new partnership with technology company Pangiam to explore how artificial intelligence could be used to speed up the baggage security screening process.
