When I was 25, single and with no Valentine's Day plans, I went out on a whim to see a 1996 movie I'd never heard of. It followed con artist Corky (Gina Gershon) as she moved into a new apartment, immediately captivated by the charms of her neighbor Violet (Jennifer Tilly).
The pair become embroiled in Violet's boyfriend Caesar's (Joe Pantoliano) money laundering scheme and hatch a plan to steal some of the money for themselves. Effortlessly sensual and exciting with an uplifting conclusion, Tied It changed my life forever from that day.
Stream Bound on Kanopy in the US for free this Valentine's Day weekend
Look
Tell me you don't see Tilly and Gershon's lips almost touching in the trailer above and not instantly fainting. Luckily for American viewers, Tied is currently available to stream for free on Kanopy…and I can't emphasize how much you need to take up the offer.
However, fans in the UK and Australia should not despair. Tied it's currently on Stan, while Brits can find it on BFI Player (although Prime Video regularly loads it for free with ads, so keep an eye out for that).
Violet and Corky's connection is something incredibly special but rarely seen, and an LGBT-positive film ends even more unusual now than then. Bound set a cultural precedent in many ways, and the fact that you know it ends in a happy ending means you can enjoy the exceptionally steamy scenes that build up the couple's budding romance.
Netflix could learn a thing or two from the gorgeous, dark lighting, and an understated soundtrack is used to perfection. Even unexpectedly gross violence becomes something beautiful. No matter what cinematic element you delve into, you will find magic.
I can't remember how many times I've watched Bound now, but you can bet streaming it is exactly how I'll spend my Valentine's Day. if you think The matrix It is a masterpiece of cinema, wait until you see the film that allowed it to be made.
