The announcement of not one but two new tomb Raider games was one of the biggest surprises of The Game Awards 2025.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of AtlantisA new version of the first game in the series will arrive next year. while Tomb Raider: Catalystscheduled for release in 2027. The former will be the first new installment in the series in almost a decade.
Considered “an impressive reinvention” of 1996 tomb Raider, Legacy of Atlantis has a lot to live up to, as it seems positioned to return the series to its roots after the acclaimed reboot trilogy.
“I think we're the ones putting the most pressure on ourselves,” explained developer studio Crystal Dynamics head Scot Amos in a recent Q&A session attended by TechRadar Gaming.
“As fans we know what we want […] “And everything we do is for the fans,” he continued. “We listen very carefully to our fans, the public and the players.”
“There is tremendous pressure to be respectful, but also to maintain that iconic core that has made this character [of protagonist Lara Croft] holding on for so long.”
According to Amos, the team is driven by the desire to “always be better and better every time to maintain that legacy.”
We will have to see how Legacy of Atlantis accumulates against the other tomb Raider games when it launches for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC in 2026.
