After what seems like a very long wait, all signs point to an imminent release of Sonos headphones, and we just received another big hint that they'll be arriving in the coming months.
According to Reddit (via 9to5Mac), the headphones have just gone through the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approval process, meaning they have received regulatory clearance to go on sale.
There's not too much information here other than that they're headphones, with ear cups and Wi-Fi compatibility, but it usually doesn't take long for products to go on sale once they've been given the go-ahead. ahead of the FCC.
The latest rumors suggest that June is the month in which the Sonos headphones will be introduced, which would fit with the FCC clearance in March. There has also been talk that Sonos could introduce a party spokesperson at the same time.
What to expect
While we wait for the Sonos headphones to become official, we've had plenty of leaks about what to expect. Sonos CEO Patrick Spence has gone on record saying that a “new product in a multibillion-dollar category” is on the way — hint, hint.
Patents already drawn up by Sonos show that these cans will come with Wi-Fi connectivity, and it's clear that you'll be able to use them with an existing Sonos speaker system without issue, switching audio streams between devices as needed.
Other features mentioned in the patents are support for noise cancellation technology and possibly a digital assistant that you can talk to through headphones. All of this, of course, remains to be confirmed and plans for the products can always change.
Price-wise, the Sonos headphones will apparently cost around $449, which works out to around £350/AU$675. That would undercut what you pay for the AirPods Max, something the Sonos headphones will challenge.
