AI is the next big thing in smartphones and there is nothing we can do about it. Sorry if you were expecting one foldable iPhone or a Motorola Rizr rollable coming soon. Instead, you get AI, and for smartphone makers, it couldn't have come at a better time.
Hoping something else would be the next big thing? Did you think they were glasses? I thought they were glasses. I admit it I seriously overestimated the state of smart glasses technology so far. Really smart glasses It's a decade away, maybe more. I still believe that smart glasses they're the next thing, but now it's more like the next thing, or what follows what comes next. You know, not the next one, but the NEXT one.
We are stuck with our phones. The phone you just bought won't be the last thing you buy called a “smartphone.” There will be another one and it will do more than the one you have now, and what will mainly do more is AI. It will be an AI like you have never seen, heard or even felt. We are never safe with AI; There might be a feeling that AI is coming soon.
There will be other improvements besides AI, right?
Forget about the rest of the smartphone. Forget about other improvements. They are already using titanium. What's next, Adamantium? That's not real, unlike AI, which is totally real and not a marketing gimmick that can be done with large language models.
Won't smartphone cameras also improve? Who knows more. The camera numbers have stopped making sense. They are like quantum string theory. Everyone pretends to understand them, but then a quark wobbles to the other side of the galaxy and we pretend that cause and effect can be reversed.
Case in point: the galaxy. We had a 10X zoom on the Galaxy S23 Ultra. It was great; best zoom ever. There is nothing better than that. But do you know what's even better? 5X zoom. We had a 10X zoom, then we got a 5X zoom on the new and improved Galaxy S24 Ultra. When it comes to having too much zoom, 5 is better than 10.
And let's be honest, Samsung's best camera phones are stellar thanks to AI, not zoom. When you take a photo of the full moon that wows iPhone fans, it's thanks to AI. AI was already here, and it's also what's next.
But we don't have a foldable iPhone yet!
There must be other improvements besides AI, right? Have we passed the point of no return? To find the answer, I asked Google Gemini Advanced, an AI. His response was a mix of folder, AI hallucinations, and a shrug.
Gemini suggested there could be new advances in batteries, faster displays, or better yet, sustainable materials and manufacturing. Plus, he says 6G is coming soon, so 5G needs to watch its back.
I guess this means foldable phones don't exist? They were just starting to get the basics right, but serious questions remain about the durability and longevity of foldable screens.
Why isn't the OnePlus Open waterproof? Why doesn't Samsung offer certified refurbished foldable phones? Why has the Google Pixel Fold fallen behind less powerful Pixel phones in feature drops?
Foldable phones have had a short and dubious history so far. The best thing that can happen to foldable phones is an AI distraction.
The symptoms of AI on your smartphone
What does it mean to have AI on your smartphone? It means you'll need a new smartphone. The AI probably doesn't work on the one you have now. Or it works but will soon stop working. Or soon it may never have worked. AI is changing rapidly and it's difficult to keep up.
When your phone has AI, you will be ready for the world of AI. His The Pixel phone will make your photos much more attractive to bots on Twitter. His Galaxy phone will write messages that your colleague's Galaxy might summarize before automatically responding. Your AI phone will be able to call your friends and talk to your AI call detection application on your behalf.
Remember when AI seemed so amazing? (Also, remember when that guy loudly quit his job because he thought about turning off AI It would be like killing a living being!?) It's coming to your phone, even better than before! Furthermore, it's not at all scary, unless you think it's scary, for AI to confidently express satires and anecdotes as irrefutable facts. So, it's horrible!
So get ready, because AI is here, it's coming soon, or it's been here for a long time, depending on which phone you use. If your phone doesn't have AI yet, your next smartphone will. There has never been a better time to never update.
