Threads is about to turn one year old, as Meta’s answer to X (formerly Twitter) officially arrived on the scene on July 5, 2023. Zuck sent out a pre-celebration Thread mentioning over 175 million active users on the platform, but there’s another birthday present hidden in the app.
Whether you use an iPhone or an Android device like a Pixel, Galaxy, or Motorola, there's a new reason to open Threads and visit your profile. Why? You'll have the chance to unlock some custom app icons, and Meta has turned the experience into a scratch-off-like game.

You want to click on the birthday cake, right?
Once you're in the Threads app on Android or iOS, head to your profile by tapping the person icon in the bottom right corner. From there, you might immediately notice a new birthday cake icon, complete with a single candle, between the Instagram icon and the hamburger menu. It's right above your profile picture.
From there, you’ll see a new page in the app that says “Threads is turning one!” The app is celebrating by letting you unlock icons designed by Thread users.
To unlock it, you just need to scratch off a shiny silver icon that sits next to the boring old Threads icon. On day one, July 3, 2024, you'll get a unique interpretation of the app logo created by @maxymachen. Once you reveal it, you can set it as your icon, and there should be four more to unlock later on. At least, there are four blank icons on this page.
Additionally, Threads notes that the ability to change its icon won't last forever and the functionality will end on July 12, 2024.
This is certainly a fun way to celebrate a year of Threads, whether by posting your own draft or even re-editing or interacting with someone else's draft. If you're interested in getting a new icon, we recommend logging into the app (make sure you have the most recent version) and scratching to reveal a new icon each day and eventually earning them all.
